Keep Cool: How to Keep Your Cats and Dogs Comfortable During a Heatwave

When the sun’s blazing and the temperatures start to rise, our furry friends can really feel the heat – far more than we do. Unlike us, dogs and cats can’t sweat the same way, so staying cool becomes a serious challenge. As a pet sitter, I’ve seen just how uncomfortable and even dangerous high temperatures can be for pets. That’s why I’ve pulled together some practical, easy and sometimes lesser-known tips to help you keep your cats and dogs cool during a heatwave.
Hydration is Everything
Encouraging your pets to drink more water is the most important thing you can do.
Multiple bowls: Place water bowls in several locations around the home – and outside in shaded areas too.
Keep it fresh: Refill frequently with cool, clean water.
Try a pet fountain: Some cats and dogs love the flowing water and will drink more because of it.
Add water to food: A splash of water or low-sodium bone broth on kibble can sneak in extra hydration.
Create Cool Zones at Home
Give your pets places to chill – literally.
Cool mats or damp towels: These provide a cooling surface to lie on.
Tile or laminate floors: Leave doors open to cooler rooms.
Fans & air circulation: A simple fan can do wonders – just ensure they can move away from it if they want.
Shaded hiding spots: Make sure there’s always a shaded, well-ventilated area for rest.
Walk & Play at the Right Time
Avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day.
Walk early morning or after sunset.
Stick to shady routes, and always test the pavement – if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws.
Keep playtime indoors when it’s scorching outside.
Some clever extras to consider:
DIY frozen treats: Freeze low-sodium broth, pet-safe fruit, or treats into ice cubes for a fun, cooling snack.
Pet-safe paddling pools: Great for dogs who enjoy a splash!
Grooming: Brushing your cat or dog more often can help remove excess fur that traps heat (but don’t shave unless advised by a vet).
Cool wraps: Lightly dampen a bandana and tie it around your dog’s neck for a refreshing touch.
Know the Signs of Overheating
It’s vital to act quickly if you see:
Excessive panting
Lethargy or confusion
Drooling
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Trouble breathing
If you’re concerned – don’t wait. Call your vet immediately.
